How Should a Men’s Shirt Fit? Five Points to Check

A good shirt fit is not defined by how closely the fabric follows the body. It is defined by balance: clean shoulders, controlled ease, sleeves that finish correctly and a hem that suits the way the shirt will be worn. These five checkpoints offer a practical way to judge that balance before focusing on colour or styling.

1. Begin at the shoulder

The shoulder seam should sit close to the natural edge of the shoulder. When it falls too far down the arm, the shirt can look oversized even when the chest feels comfortable. When it sits noticeably inside the shoulder, movement is restricted and the sleeve head may pull.

2. Check the collar with the top button closed

A collar should frame the neck without pressing into it. Fasten the top button, even when you plan to wear the shirt open. The collar should remain level rather than lifting at the back or creating a pronounced gap at the front.

3. Look for controlled ease through the chest

Stand naturally, then move your arms forward. The placket should remain reasonably straight and the buttons should not strain. Excess fabric is not automatically a fault, particularly in a regular fit, but deep folds around the armholes and sides suggest that the shirt may be too large.

4. Judge the sleeve and cuff together

The sleeve should allow the elbow to bend without pulling the body of the shirt forward. The cuff should finish around the wrist bone and remain secure without gripping. A sleeve that looks correct only when the arms are held still is rarely the right length.

5. Match the hem to the intended use

A shirt designed to be tucked needs enough length to remain in place when sitting and reaching. A shirt worn untucked should finish in proportion to the torso rather than covering most of the seat. The side profile is often the clearest place to assess this.

A final fitting routine

Button the shirt, sit down, raise both arms and reach forward. Then view the front, side and back. Fit should be assessed in motion, not only in a mirror pose.
