Tucked or Untucked? How to Read a Shirt Hem

Whether a shirt should be tucked is not decided by formality alone. Hem shape, shirt length, trouser rise and body proportion all contribute. Reading these details produces a cleaner result than following a single universal rule.

Study the hem shape

A deeply curved hem with longer front and back sections is generally designed to remain secure inside trousers. A straighter, shorter hem is more naturally suited to untucked wear. Some shirts sit between these categories, so length and setting still matter.

Check the front and back length

An untucked shirt should cover the waistband without extending so far that it shortens the legs visually. From the back, it should not cover an excessive part of the seat. A tucked shirt needs enough length to remain in place when sitting, reaching and walking.

Consider trouser rise

Higher-rise trousers usually support a tucked shirt by defining the waist and reducing the amount of shirt exposed above the waistband. Lower-rise trousers can make a tuck less secure and may lengthen the visible torso.

Match the choice to the setting

Formal tailoring, ceremonies and structured office dressing generally favour a tuck. Casual dinners and weekends can support an untucked shirt when the hem and length are appropriate. Smart-casual settings depend on the whole outfit rather than the shirt alone.

Use a movement test

For a tucked shirt, sit down and raise the arms to see whether it pulls free immediately. For an untucked shirt, walk and turn to confirm that the side seams remain balanced and the hem does not flare excessively.

Avoid the half-solution

An accidental partial tuck or a shirt repeatedly escaping the waistband weakens the line of the outfit. Choose one approach and make it deliberate. If the proportions do not work, changing the shirt or trousers is often more effective than constant adjustment.
