Who Made This Fashion Image? Content Credentials for AI-Assisted Campaigns

Cream peacock-motif men's kurta used to illustrate provenance for fashion campaign images

A campaign image may pass through a camera, background removal, colour correction, generative expansion and several rounds of retouching before it reaches a product page. By the end, the team can see the final file but may no longer know which source photograph it came from.

That is a provenance problem. For fashion, provenance matters because the image may influence expectations about colour, print placement, fit and garment construction.

Provenance is the history, not a truth score

A provenance record can show who created or edited an asset, which tools were involved and how one version relates to another. It does not prove that the garment looks exactly the same in person. A well-documented edit can still be misleading; an undocumented photograph can still be accurate.

The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity maintains the C2PA technical specification for attaching cryptographically verifiable manifests and assertions to digital content. The specification is designed to support content provenance and authenticity across an asset’s lifecycle. Review the C2PA Content Credentials specification.

What a fashion image record should preserve

The source asset

Keep the original photograph or authorised catalogue image. Record the product ID, SKU or style reference, shoot date and photographer or source owner where applicable.

The intended use

A product-detail image, campaign banner and editorial mood image have different accuracy requirements. The file should be labelled by purpose before editing begins.

The edit history

Note background replacement, generative fill, model or scene changes, colour adjustments, crop and text overlays. Record the tool and version where practical.

The approval

Assign a reviewer who checks garment colour, motif, collar, cuffs, pockets, hem, set contents and overall proportion against the authorised source.

AI can help maintain the record

An AI workflow can compare versions, summarise edits, detect a missing source link and flag large visual changes for review. It can also check whether an export lost metadata. None of those checks should be allowed to overwrite the original asset or alter product media silently.

For a visually specific product such as the Men’s Cream Peacock Motif Printed Kurta, an AI-assisted campaign should preserve the verified motif and garment construction. The existing Shopify-hosted image can act as an authorised reference; any generated scene would need separate approval before customer use.

Build a simple three-level policy

  • Catalogue: garment must remain faithful; permitted edits are tightly controlled and reviewed.
  • Campaign: scene and composition may be more expressive, while the product stays accurate.
  • Concept: exploratory imagery is clearly labelled and cannot be mistaken for a sellable product photograph.

This prevents a mood-board image from drifting into a product listing because the filename looked finished.

Do not promise more than the standard provides

Content Credentials can be removed by some workflows or platforms, and absence of credentials is not evidence of deception. Verification depends on supported tools and valid signing relationships. Keep an internal asset register even when credentials are attached.

Google’s current AI principles also call for safeguards, monitoring, human oversight, privacy and respect for intellectual property. Those controls complement provenance technology. See the Google AI principles.

A review checklist before export

Confirm the product reference, source rights, edit log, intended channel, reviewer, alt text and disclosure language where required. Open the final file on the actual product or campaign layout. Check that crop and compression have not hidden important garment details.

The TRYBUY.IN perspective

AI-assisted imagery is most useful when creativity and accountability travel together. Preserve the source, document the edit and give a person responsibility for the final visual claim.

FAQ

Do Content Credentials prove an image is accurate?

No. They support provenance; product accuracy still requires comparison and review.

Should every AI edit be disclosed?

Follow the applicable platform, market and campaign rules, and maintain an internal edit record regardless.

Can credentials replace source files?

No. Keep original assets, rights information and version history.
