Men’s Shirt Size and Fit Guide

A well-fitting shirt should allow comfortable movement through the shoulders, chest and sleeves while keeping the placket and side seams straight. Size labels vary between styles, so compare your measurements with the individual product chart rather than choosing only by the size name.

Measure your body

Use a flexible measuring tape and keep it level. Measure the fullest part of the chest without pulling tightly. Measure across the shoulders from one shoulder edge to the other, and measure sleeve length from the shoulder point to the wrist. For shirt length, measure from the highest shoulder point to the preferred hem position.

Body measurements and garment measurements

Body measurements describe you; garment measurements describe the shirt. A shirt needs additional room beyond the body measurement for comfort and movement. Compare both sets of measurements and consider whether the product is described as slim, regular or relaxed.

Check the main fit points

  • Shoulders: the seam should sit close to the natural shoulder edge.
  • Chest: the buttons and placket should lie flat without pulling.
  • Collar: it should close comfortably without pressure at the neck.
  • Sleeves: you should be able to bend and raise your arms comfortably.
  • Length: confirm whether the hem is intended to be worn tucked or untucked.
  • Cuffs: cuffs should close without restricting the wrist.

Understand common fits

A slim fit sits closer through the chest and waist. A regular fit provides more ease and a straighter silhouette. Fit can also vary with fabric and construction, so use the measurements shown on the individual product page.

What to do between sizes

When measurements fall between two sizes, consider the fit description, fabric and intended use. The larger size generally provides more movement, especially when the shirt will be worn for long periods or layered over an undershirt. Do not assume every cotton or linen-blend fabric will stretch.

Try the complete outfit

Check the shirt with the trousers, belt and jacket you plan to wear. Sit, reach forward and raise your arms to confirm that the placket, shoulders and sleeves remain comfortable.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose my usual T-shirt size?

Use it only as a starting point. Compare your measurements with the specific shirt size chart because shirt construction and fit can differ.

How should a shirt fit at the shoulders?

The shoulder seam should sit near the natural shoulder edge without hanging significantly below it or pulling inward.

Should a slim-fit shirt feel tight?

No. It should sit closer to the body while still allowing the buttons to lie flat and the arms to move comfortably.
